Historical Fiction Off the Beaten Path: Book List

At the 2013 Historical Novel Society conference in St. Petersburg, FL, I joined authors Heather Domin (The Soldier of Raetia, Allegiance) and Julie K. Rose (The Pilgrim Glass, Oleanna), and book blogger and reviewer Andrea Connell (former Historical Novels Review Indies editor) to talk about historical novels that were 'off-the-beaten-path'.  You can learn more about the workshop here.

We compiled a list of books published within the last five years that feature one or more of these elements:
  • unusual settings (locations and eras)
  • characters that are LGBTQ and/or people of color
  • mixed genres
  • otherwise 'non-mainstream' in writing style, characterization, POV, etc
Following the workshop, attendees submitted their own recommendations, and panelist Heather Domin has gathered up all those titles and posted it online.
